Wind and snow at Carson Pass

Windy, snowy morning along Frog Lake Ridge. Only an inch of new snow was observed in wind sheltered areas. Windward slopes were getting scoured back down to a supportable crust layer. Leeward slopes were getting loaded right below their apex, but not much wind deposited snow was observed downslope yet. Several mitt pits and hand shears showed a weak layer of old snow just below the new snow. On slopes that had a crust before the new snow, there was weak old snow above and below the crust. Fragile cornices were already developing and failed easily as I approached them, but only entrained loose snow on the slopes below - not enough slab formation yet downslope from cornices.

Pic: Stepping on boot deep wind loaded areas produced small cracks that traveled short distances, as new snow tapered quickly to minimal depth.
