Good Refreeze, Softening by Midday on Yuba Pass

We went back out to Yuba Pass to look at the buried surface hoar layer and see how current wet snow was developing.  A solid overnight refreeze with clear skies occurred in this area.  Strong 6'' + melt freeze surface crusts were on all aspects and started softening by late morning in sun exposed areas.  Light to moderate NE winds kept the ridgelines cool with firm snow.  We dug a snowpit on Lincoln Ridge to test the buried surface hoar layer.  Snowpack tests showed mostly stable results.  We also went back to the observation location from Sunday April 12 and did side by side snowpack tests with 2x ECTX.  The recent strong overnight refreezes have seemed to lock up the upper snowpack.  This buried surface hoar layer still remains a concern for the future as temperatures warm and melt water reaches this layer.
