Variable conditions up and over to Meiss Meadow

      We toured up and over into Meiss Meadow today. On the drive up Carson Pass we saw a recent avalanche on Elephants Back and loose wet roller balls on east facing aspects.  When we parked and started up the temperature was well above freezing, we only made it a few hundred feet before we took off a layer. At this point I probed down and there was 180cms of snow @ 8100' on a south facing aspect. As we continued conditions were variable with a few inches of new snow on old wind effected snow just below the surface. As we got higher the wind affect and wind scouring become more prevalent and the new snow was being transported from East to West along mid-slope ridges. About half way up we came to a east facing mid-slope cornice that I kicked on and some larger chunks did release but did not propagate very far. As we approached the summit the surface was down to rocks and an old ice crust. When we reached the summit @ 1200 the winds were now cold and strong out of the south transporting snow at the ridge above tree line. We transitioned over to ride down the north facing aspect, at the top sustrugi was present until we made tree line, from there snow was powdery and unconsolidated to the meadow. I stopped and dug a pit @ 8400' on NE aspect and there was over 330cms of snow as I plunged my entire probe to the ground.The snow pack was right side up. There was a clear rain crust about 70cms down but did not show any signs of instability within my compression tests. As we ascended back up surface hoar was present and was widespread up to near treeline. From there we could still see snow moderately transporting at the ridge line above us @ 1400. On the way down the south aspect snow had softened up and riding conditions were better than anticipated. On the drive back down Carson Pass we saw more loose wet debris piles along the way.
