Observations from Slab Cliffs

Signs of persistent weak layer stability gains in regards to the deep slab avalanche problem were observed in this area today. The faceted weak layer of concern in this area was identified just less than 3 feet below the snow surface. This once faceted snow has undergone significant rounding. Snowpit tests did not reveal any indications of instability.

Snow surface conditions in this area remain unconsolidated and unaffected by melt on N aspects and in well shaded areas of NW and NE aspects above 8,600'. This may extend lower in some areas.

E and SE aspects all the way up to the highpoint of travel today at 9,700' had see significant amounts of melt-freeze over the past week. Descending SE and E aspects between noon and 1 pm yielded skier supportable wet snow conditions. Not true corn conditions, but getting close. A few minor roller balls were triggered by a ski cut on a SE aspect test slope at around 8,500' at 1 pm.
