Deep slab associated Feb facets dormant but not unreactive.

A crown profile was collected today at the site of one of three deep slab avalanches that occurred March 22 on N aspects along the E ridge of Silver Peak in near treeline terrain. Inspection of fracture line at the crown confirmed that these avalanches failed on the remains of the Feb facet layer. Snowpit tests indicated that that this layer is dormant. It is currently stable (as defined by SWAG Snow Stability Rating System), but still has the ability to propagate following the very unlikely event of weak layer failure. The remains of the Feb facets are nearly all rounded crystals at this time, but a few lingering traces of faceted crystals remain within the layer.
